Freakley's Project
Venice Biennale, 2024
Danielle Freakley
Freakley is a Seychellois-Australian artist exhibiting in the Venice Biennale 2024, Arsenale, Seychelles Pavilion.
Freakley works in performance, social practice, interactive systems and sculpture. Her often overcomplicated play with systems, social communication, exposing lurking historical relationships, private subtexts, and slide into an unfading pit of re-authorship. She has previously exhibited at Tate - Liverpool Biennial, Museum of Contemporary Art - Sydney, Performa – Performance Biennial of New York. She has been credited "performance inspiration" in film co-produced by Alex Reynolds, Alma Söderberg in “The Singing Hand” with Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Freakley has a number of art awards, grants, residencies and exhibited in various other international biennials, triennials, national galleries, state galleries, contemporary art spaces.
Freakley is currently represented by
Moore Contemporary in Western Australia.
Raimundas Maslausksas
Raimundas Maslausksas previously curated two pavilions together into one new country in a sporting arena and received special accolades for it in Venice "Oo" Lithuanian and Cyprus Pavilions (Venice Biennale, 2013). In another ongoing project, he curates artists under hypnosis for the last 15 years (Guggenheim NY 2017, Documenta 2013) and other spaces, "Repetition Island" (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2010). Maslausksas and Freakley have worked together before in the UK on a series of social practice works, writings, sound pieces, Liverpool Oratory crypt, tunnels and Tate (Liverpool Biennial 2016).
Rai's unique approaches to curating and writing are fantastically experimental with language, collective intelligence and roaming systems.
FREAKLEY'S WORK IN THE VENICE BIENNALE
The specific details of the work remain private in 2023.
However without revealing exactly what the work is, the following are a few key areas to consider.
EXPERIMENTAL LANGUAGE
Freakley has held a number of wild, intensive long term conversational projects over the past two decades. Freakley is a social practice artist, sculptor and specialises in interactive pieces. The work she is producing for
Venice is the most ambitious project she has
developed in her lifetime so far.
VENICE CROWDS
Freakley has studied Venice crowd dynamics and has designed the work specifically for Venice.
This work has been in development for several years, is completely immersed and attuned to the strange stampedes of people woven throughout Venice.
The 2024 Venice Biennale theme is "Foreigners Everywhere". Freakley's work sits perfectly within the 2024 theme both conceptually and logistially. She is in the right time and place to realise this extremely ambitious, highly developed project, holding a mirror up to us as the crowd, whilst her artwork also has its own life, moving and spreading in packs.
